Episode 289: #QCCC: 1986 RAD Movies or BAD Movies & GoBots (featuring ThePoeticCritic)
Before we get into spooky month (Despite what the misguided Zach Cregger suggested with his misguided horror from this month), CatBusRuss goes back to Memorial Day Weekend and Quad City Comic Con to discuss copycat cinema from 1986 with ThePoeticCritic. Which movies were RAD? Which movies were BAD?
This is the third time our host has presented this panel, but the first time with his big sister. He debuted the panel with frequent contributor Andrew Tiede back at UI-Con in January. Those two boys have similar taste in cinema (Andrew helped inspire the name of the podcast.), but what does the conversation look like when you introduce Central Illinois's premier cinephile?
She has more cinematic knowledge then her younger sibling, but are the two cut from the cloth when it come to taste? They had to watch the same VHS tapes in the 1980s. A TV in each kid's room was a novel concept when raising Gen X kids. And the two were not allowed to watch Rated R flicks until the MPA(A) told their parents it was okay.
The two got to cheer on Johnny 5 and Guttenberg & Winslow on HBO, but they knew they were missing out on Killbots and Candy & Levy. Since Arnold Schwarzenegger did not box, they were unfamiliar with his feud with Sylvester Stallone until "Last Action Hero". They did not have a clue what their classmates were talking about, so the two might be on a level playing ground with kids who were born nearly 20 years after these films were released.
Were the two going to be chatting with the youngsters, or was the audience going to be their nostalgic parents?
Russ is bringing this panel to GalaxyCon St. Louis (Oct. 23-25) and Twin Cities Con (Nov. 20-22). To add further content to those discussions, he went on the Internet Archive to see if history chose the right robots who can masquerade as vehicles. Is "GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords" evidence for "Robot Chicken" to treat them so badly?
The winners of 1986 maybe up for debate, but when it comes to healthier snacking, there is champion. Try a flavor from from Doich! Snacking Dough. It is cookie dough with more protein, less sugar, and none of the eight major allergens. Our host is not a cookie fan, but this stuff taste great and leaves you feeling full quickly.
